This post is about the first and last time I went hunting with my husband.
When we were dating, we spent a lot of time together. As we grew closer, my husband thought it would be a great idea to take me hunting with him. He had been hunting ever since he was young, was skilled in patience and persistence, and long ago perfected the art of sitting in one area for a long period of time, waiting to bring home the meat.
I, on the other hand, have spent years perfecting skills more akin to modern life. But I thought, what the heck, I can sit in his blind with him, and we will be able to talk and grow closer together.
So, we wake up before dawn one morning, gather everything we might need, and load up his truck. He brings his hunting gear, while I pack drinks into a cooler. At this point I imagined there would be Internet service at the blind, so I would just serf the web while he watched for deer.
We leave, drive for about 2 hours, talking, enjoying each other’s company, when my husband has an epiphany: he forgot his gun.
I can’t help but to laugh a little as we turn around and drive back for it. His brother was going hunting with us, and since he did not forget his gun, he stayed and started hunting.
Now the sun has come up by the time we make it back to the campsite. We hustle our way down to his spot where he had set up the deer blind.
And guess what? No Internet.
Also, you are supposed to stay extremely quiet while waiting for the deer, so he didn’t want to talk a lot.
So what did I do to pass the time? I opened up some of my sodas and water and just sat in the back of the blind, sipping on Dr. Pepper.
But you know what happens when you drink a lot? You have to go pee.
According to my husband, I peed so much in the few hours we were out there that I scared off all the deer. He didn’t see a single creature, not even a squirrel, come his way.
And that’s when he decided that hunting would be his alone time, and things have been great ever since.
