Don’t Feed the Wildlife

It was a dark and stormy night. Thunder growled across the darkness while rain whipped against the side of the house. But all were safe and warm inside: the humans under covers, the dogs on dog beds, and the kitties roaming the house because it was around 2 am.

Then the house shuddered as a boom sounded and the bedroom fan retired its whirring. The electricity shut off.

But never fear, the faithful house generator cranked up in the heat of the storm, unnoticed by the neighbors over the howling wind. It rustled up energy and soon that house fan was twirling away and all the clock lights started blinking on various appliances.

And, the clinking of cat kibble was heard. Immediate zoomies by Elsa were made for this unexpected treat. Her food is on a timer, and anytime the power comes back on it does an emergency feeding in case any animals have gone a long period without food.

So there was one.

Street power kicked back on within the hour, and the trusty generator rumbled off. But the storm raged on, and knocked the electricity out again. One not to complain, the generator coughed back to life and brought select outlets and circuits online.

Food clinked again, and the diet Elsa was supposed to be on was not looking good. So there were two.

Now it was about 5 am, and around 5:45 or so street power sparked. This time it stayed on, and the cat feeder, ever dedicated to its task, gave its regular feeding at 6 am.

So there were three.

I was notified of all the food activity once I awoke and saw the phone notifications. The storm passed, the dogs were let out, and I cooked eggs and sausage. My husband and I moved into my study to eat and focus on our computers, and wouldn’t you know it, Elsa was doing twirls on the cat tree for more food…

…and of course she has my husband wrapped around her paw. I can see what he’s about to do.

“Don’t feed the wildlife!” I say, but the deliciousness is given and Elsa’s eyes are huge. There might have been additional breakfast treats given.

So there were multiple.

Sometimes, things just fall into place, good or bad. Occasionally you make things happen, other times it seems like they appear out of the blue. I’m sure that night Elsa thought it would be another regular time in the black, playing with her brother Socks, and had no idea that her food fantasies would come true.
