July 4th Winterized

July 4th is a glorious day for freedom, relaxation, and fun.

It is not a day to freeze.

It didn’t even get that hot. The high was around 93 degrees Fahrenheit, but my husband, with his Canadian blood and our house powered by solar panels, decided to keep everything cooled to 65 degrees Fahrenheit.

Which does not sit well with my Texas lizard blood.

We were both enjoying the day in my study, he phone scrolling on my futon while I was sitting in my desk chair on top of an electric blanket and another wrapped around my legs. I was cold. I was freezing. I was drinking hot tea.

With goosebumps I was contemplating life choices, as several things have been going on and I needed to plan next moves. While deep in strategerizing my husband looks up from his screen and says, “The utility water domain is up for sale. Can you buy it?”

Something I haven’t written about yet is my husband’s quest to push out the good ol’ boy system on our local electric coop and water district boards. He’s made more headway with the electric company, but this day would hopefully be a turning point for the water fight as I pressed buy on the url. So now he owns one of the water district’s web domains that redirects to a site that talks about their problems. And quite a few people have already joined the social media group set up about the issues.

How’s that for freedom?

But my freezing to death and life contemplations were still an issue. So I set up camp on the front porch with a large thermos of tea and warmed myself, as only Texans could.

Then later that night we sat outside watching neighbors shoot off fireworks. It was a mix of meh and good, and a few spectacular thrown in for about an hour’s viewing. When we got back inside we found that the kitties had celebrated too by licking dry my husband’s left-out ice cream bowl and drinking cup.

And yes, I went to bed with an electric blanket, in the middle of summer, because of my husband’s winterized blood.

I hope you enjoyed the Independence Day holiday!
